Inherited from Middle French bannir, from Old French bannir, banir, from Frankish *bannijan, from Proto-Germanic *bannijaną (“to banish”), from *bannaz, *banną (“ban, curse, order, banishment”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂- (“to speak, say”). More at ban.
bannir
This is a regular verb of the second conjugation, like finir, choisir, and most other verbs with infinitives ending in -ir. One salient feature of this conjugation is the repeated appearance of the infix -iss-.
