Etymology

Perhaps a Romance derivation from Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐌽𐌳𐍅𐌰 (bandwa, “sign”);^[1] alternatively from Old French bande (“band”). Compare Portuguese bandeira, Spanish bandera, French bannière and Italian bandiera.
