Etymology

Probably from Vulgar Latin root *excotīre, from Classical Latin cōs, cōtis (“whetstone”). Compare cute and cuțit (“knife”). Cognate with Megleno-Romanian ascut, scuțǫt. Cf. also the semantic evolution of Catalan esmolar (“sharpen”), from mola (“grindstone”). Was also possibly influenced by a Vulgar Latin *acutiāre, from acūtus. Compare Italian aguzzare, Spanish aguzar. Another theory suggests the root *exacutīre, from exacūtus (“sharpened, stimulated”), from acūtus.
