From Proto-Tai *ʔɤkᴰ (“chest”), from Old Chinese 臆 (OC *qɯɡ). Cognate with Thai อก (òk), Northern Thai ᩋᩫ᩠ᨠ, Isan เอิก, Lao ອົກ (ʼok) or ເອິກ (ʼœk), Shan ဢိုၵ်း (ʼúek), Ahom 𑜒𑜤𑜀𑜫 (ʼuk, “breast”).
