Probably originally referred to something small and somewhat compact, and as a raffling lot, likely wooden. In that case, compare Old Chinese 枚 (OC *mɯːl, “wooden peg; small flat object”), which is thought to be an Austroasiatic loan; perhaps the Burmese was loaned from a related source, as well.”
