Etymology 1

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Doesn't seem to be mentioned either by STEDT or Luce 1981. Very vague semantic and phonetic resemblance to Old Chinese 瞑 (OC *meːn, *meːns, *meːŋ, “to close one's eyes”), though probably not related” |
Etymology 2

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (mâi "anil, indigo"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. Doesn't seem to bear resemblance to any words for "indigo" from neighboring countries with national status. Perhaps a semantic extension of the "dark" sense in Etymology 3 (indigo is dark)?” |

Etymology 4
|
This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (mâi "lot ( raffling )"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. Probably originally referred to something small and somewhat compact, and as a raffling lot, likely wooden. In that case, compare Old Chinese 枚 (OC *mɯːl, “wooden peg; small flat object”), which is thought to be an Austroasiatic loan; perhaps the Burmese was loaned from a related source, as well.” |
