Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑁄𑀝𑁆𑀝 (koṭṭa), from Sanskrit कोट्ट (koṭṭa), कोट (koṭa); ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *kōṭṭay (wall). Compare Tamil கோட்டை (kōṭṭai, fort, castle, stronghold).
