Inherited from Old East Slavic червьнъ (červĭnŭ, “June”). Cognates include Belarusian чэрвень (červjenʹ, “June”), Czech červen, Polish czerwiec, and Bulgarian червен (červen, “July”). Ultimately, from Proto-Slavic *čьrvenъ, which is a passive participle of *čьrviti (“to dye red”), from *čьrvь (“worm, larva”), referring to certain insect larvae being used to manufacture red dye at this time of year.
