A vinicultural loan of Semitic origin, compare Hebrew כַּד (kad), Ugaritic 𐎋𐎄 (kd), Imperial Aramaic 𐡊𐡃 (kd), Punic 𐤊𐤃 (kd).[1] The Semitic word may ultimately trace to Dravidian; see Akkadian 𒃶𒁺 (kandu) for more.[2]
