SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), formerly SRM University, is a private deemed university, located in Kattankulathur, Chengalpattu (near Chennai), Tamil Nadu, India. Founded in 1985 as SRM Engineering College in Kattankulathur, it gained the deemed University status in 2002. SRM Institute of Science and Technology is spread across five campuses — Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, Vadapalani,(all in Chennai), Ghaziabad and Tiruchirappalli. Those are all same University as per section 3 of University Grants Commission Act, 1956. It has three sister universities in Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Sikkim.[3]

History
The first college of what is now SRMIST, SRM (Sri Ramaswamy Memorial) Engineering College, was established in 1985, followed by the other SRM colleges from 1992 to 1997.[4] The institute gained deemed status in 2002 as SRM Institute of Science and Technology and renamed SRM University in 2006.[4] In 2017, its name was reverted to SRM Institute of Science and Technology following UGC's order to drop "University" from the name.[5]
Campuses
Located about 35 km (22 mi)[6] away from the city of Chennai, this campus is situated on a 250 acre[7] site overlooking Grand Southern Trunk Road (GST Road), NH-32. The main campus at Kattankulathur consists of a College of Engineering and Technology, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, College of Science and Humanities, School of Management, School of Architecture and School of Law. It is also one of the few schools in India that offers a Degree in Telecom studies.

Vadapalani campus
Vadapalani Campus is located at Vadapalani, Chennai. This campus houses the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Management, Faculty of Science and Humanities. The SRM Institute for Medical Sciences is also located within the campus.[9]
Tiruchirappalli campus
The 250-acre (100 ha) campus at Trichy on the Trichy-Chennai highway houses the faculties of Engineering & Technology, Science & Humanities, Allied Medical Science and Management.[9]

The QS World University Rankings ranked SRM Institute of Science and Technology 271-280 in Asia in 2024.[21]
SRM Institute of Science and Technology ranked 29th among engineering colleges in India by India Today in 2020. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked it 13th in the engineering ranking, 11th in the pharmacy ranking, 12th among universities, 24th in research and 21st overall in NIRF 2024.[22]
