List of incidents of violence against women in Spain

This is a list of incidents of violence against women in Spain. The Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality publishes statistics on violence against women and counts every death. Also, media in Spain reports every case of violence against women that results in a death.

In 2004 Spain passed a world-first gender-based violence law that introduced special courts that deal with cases where the survivor’s gender is an aggravating factor. In 20 years they have dealt with 2 million complaints and convicted 700,000 people, 72% being men.^[1]

Since 2003 the Spanish government has been counting gender violence murders and by December 2022 they had reached 1,183,^[2] 377 children have been made orphans and 48 children have been killed.^[3]

Spain was an initial signatory on 11 May 2011 of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (CETS No. 210), known as the “Istanbul Convention”, which was ratified by Spain on 10 April 2014 and came into effect on 1 August 2014. The Istanbul Convention is a legally-binding instrument which "creates a comprehensive legal framework and approach to combat violence against women" and is focused on preventing domestic violence, protecting victims and prosecuting accused offenders.^[4]

1990s

• January 21, 1992: Marta Obregón Rodríguez: A 22-year-old Spanish woman was returning home when she was kidnapped by a man and taken out of town so he could use her sexually. She was stabbed 14 times but would not allow him to rape her.^[5]
• November 13, 1992: Alcasser Girls: 3 teenage girls from Alcàsser, Valencia, Spain, were kidnapped, raped, assaulted and murdered after hitchhiking to get to a nightclub.
• April 12, 1993: Kidnapping of Anabel Segura: 2 men kidnap and later (when she was trying to escape) murder a 22-year-old woman.^[6]
• December 17, 1997: Ana Orantes: After her testimony was shown on a television program, she was killed by her last husband.^[7][8] It caused a big repercussion about gender violence, and as a consequence, the restructuring of the Criminal Code of Spain.^[9]
• April 20, 1997: Murder of Eva Blanco: Spanish high school student was murdered in Algete, Community of Madrid. The case remained unsolved until 2015.
• October 9, 1999: Murder of Rocío Wanninkhof: a Dutch-Spanish teenager who was murdered in her hometown of Mijas.

2000s

• December 2, 2001: Murder of Helena Jubany: a librarian who was murdered in Sabadell.
• May 17, 2003: Murder of Sandra Palo: A 22-year-old woman was raped, run over by a car and burnt alive by 4 minors (in the 14-18 age range) in Madrid.^[10]
• May 24, 2003: A man (34) shoots his wife (29) in La Puebla de Híjar Teruel.^[11] He killed another woman in 2019.
• August 14, 2003: Murder of Sonia Carabantes: Murder of a 17-year-old girl that helped to solve the case of Rocío Wanninkhof
• January 24, 2009: Murder of Marta del Castillo: a Spanish high school student who disappeared and was presumably murdered.

60 women were killed in Spain in cases of gender violence^[26]

January 17	A woman (69) is killed in Orba, Alicante. Her partner flees to Germany, where he confesses the crime at the airport to police. Silent demonstrations were held in Alicante and Valencia.[31]
January 21	A man (44) kills his wife (39) and then he commits suicide in Terrassa. They had a 6-year-old child. About 200 people meet in front of the city hall to protest against violence against women.[32]
February 4	A woman is stabbed to death by a man in Arrecife. They met some months previously.[33]
February 6	A woman is strangled in Ronda. About 30 people protest against the crime.[34]
February 12	A man (47) stabs to death his partner (38) in Valencia.[35]
March 9	A man (75) confesses to have killed his wife (76) six months before in San Miguel de Salinas.[36]
March 10	A woman (43) is killed by her partner in Xàbia.[37]
March 12	A woman (23) is thrown out of a van driven by her husband (24) in Cáceres and dies due to the injuries.[38][39]
March 29	A man kills his wife (31) in Alhaurín de la Torre and then he commits suicide. About 100 people gather in the city hall square to protest against the crime.[40][41]
March 30	A man shoots his wife (24) in Lleida and then attempts suicide.[42]
April 2	A man (34) stabs his wife (29) to death in Vitoria-Gasteiz.[43]
May 3	A man (50) kills his wife (47) and her boss (57) in Sorbas and Níjar respectively.[44]

He is released 4 days later because it is found that the DNA of the knife was his brother's (the brother-in-law's victim),[49] who confessed the crime.[50] Investigation still does not rule out an involvement of the husband.[51]
February 22	A man (41) shoots his ex-partner (37) in Zaragoza.[52]
March 14	A man (46) is accused of stabbing his partner (34) in Gijón, Asturias.[53] Finally he was sentenced to 4 years for reckless homicide as the judge considered that he had stabbed her in a struggle to try to pick the knife from her hands, but without intending to kill her.[54]
April 12	A man (49) stabs his partner (48) in Benidorm, Alicante.[55]
April 14	A mosso d'Esquadra (45) shoots his ex-partner (36) in front of their 7-year-old daughter. Then he commits suicide. In Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Barcelona.[56]
July 24	A man is arrested accused of suffocating his wife (49) in Bilbao.[57] He was acquitted for lack of evidence in 2018.[58]

• July 7: La Manada sexual abuse case: A group of five men sexually abused an 18-year-old girl in a portal.^[59]
• August 22: Murder of Diana Quer: An 18-year-old woman is abducted and murdered.^[60]
• August 24, 2016: A man ties his ex-wife to her bed and beats her in front of their children in Villa de Vallecas.^[61]

March 1	A man slaughters his partner (32) and then manipulates the gas pipes to cause an explosion and commit suicide. In Madrid.[80]
March 29	A man (47) strangles his wife (42) and smothers their two children (ages, 5 and 8). Then he commits suicide by throwing himself out the window. in Campo de Criptana, Ciudad Real.[81]

October 19	The corpse of a woman (67) is found in a swamp in El Arenoso, Córdoba. Her husband (70) confessed the crime to the police.[169]
October 23	A man (51), with a criminal record for gender violence and sexual abuse stabs his ex-partner (36) in Seville.[170]
October 23	A man (47) burns a house with his wife (50) inside in Pamplona, Navarra.[171]

December 15	A sick woman (57) dies in Manresa, Barcelona after being bedridden in bed for several weeks. Her husband (63) failed to take care of her or call the doctors.[175]
December 25	A woman (54) disappears in Cartagena, Murcia.After months of research police arrests her partner. The corpse has not appeared.[176]

Since she wasn't there he tries to sexually abuse her daughter (22) but he is stopped by her grandmother's partner (70), who is killed in the process. The aggressor falls into a ditch while trying to run away and is detained.[180]
April 16	A man hits his partner and their 7-month-old baby with a bat with the inscription "Doma-esposas" ("Wife-tamer")[181]
April 30	A man allegedly sets fire to his ex-partner's apartment.[182]
May 3	A man is arrested after kidnapping his ex-partner for 3 days.[183]
May 3	A woman (33) is murdered in an open field in Castrogonzalo, Zamora. At first a shepherd is arrested, but finally the police end up arresting his 16-year-old son who tried to incriminate him.[184]
May 17	A man (56) is arrested for allegedly holding his wife (66) and daughter (29) in his home for more than 4 months in Alcantarilla, Murcia.[185]
June 4	A man (35) kills his ex-sister in law (39) in Albacete. He was actually trying to go after his ex-wife.[186]
June 18	The corpse of a woman (36) appears floating in a pool of Ciutadella, Menorca. At first it was believed to be an accident, but in November, de 2019 her partner (40) was detained, charged with homicide.[187]
June 21	A prisoner (42) in regime of semi-freedom non fatally attacks his partner (40) with a hammer. The reason he was in prison is for killing another girlfriend with a hammer in 2002.[188]
August 13	A man (48) burns himself in Madrid after arguing with his partner (38) extending the fire around the building.[189]
September 12	A woman (35) escapes from his partner (37) who has kidnapped her for four months in Fuenlabrada, Madrid.[190]
September 25	A man (48) stabs his 3-year-old and 6-years-old daughters in revenge for his wife (42) having denounced him. Then commits suicide by throwing himself out of a window. In Castellón de la Plana.[191]

June 10	A man (48) stabs his partner (29)because she wanted to break up with him. In Alboraya, Valencia. She is the 1000th murdered women since there are official data in 2003.[216]
June 14	A woman (49) dies stabbed by his partner (46), who was on probation after having murdered his previous wife in 2002 with an iron cord. After killing her, he set the building on fire, also dying. In Córdoba.[217]
July 2	A man (42) kills his wife (42) with a hammer in Rute, Córdoba and later surrenders to the police.[218]
July 3	Police found evidence that a woman (25) found dead on 9 September 2018 in Granollers, Barcelona had been murdered by her husband.[219]
July 13	A woman (47) is stabbed by her husband in Elche, Alicante.[220]

July 31	Erica Vanessa Reyes (22)	killed in Utrera, Seville with a hammer. Presumably by her husband (43), from whom she was separating, who has been arrested.[357]
August 7	Zhour (27)	killed in Pescadería, Almería, with her throat cut in front of their three children. Her husband (32) has been arrested. No 33.[381]
August 8	Juana Cepas (31)	Mother of three shot and killed in Pozoblanco, Córdoba by her husband (39) from whom she was getting separated. He then committed suicide. a three year old found the bodies, her screams alerting neighbours.[357]
August 8	Evarista L.G (91)	A 92 year old man was arrested over the murder of his wife in Tenerife. No 35.[382]
August 8	Soledad (50)	Mother of two, allegedly shot by her partner (62) in Moratalaz, Madrid before committing suicide. No previous record of violence. No 36.[357]
August 23	Encarnación (63)	Killed by her ex husband (73) who was still living in the same house.[383]
August 27	Buran Forouzan (64)	In Jerez de la Frontera, homeless woman killed by partner (70), found dismembered in a well. He had already served over 15 years in prison for a similar offence.
August 30	Rosario Martín Chamorro (36)	In Béjar, Salamanca, the mother of four was killed before her partner decided not to jump from a viaduct and was detained.[384]
August 30	Raquel Lorente (58)	In Valencia, the victim was shot and killed by her divorced partner (70) an ex policeman before he committed suicide. No 40.[385]
September	(30)	A Honduran was stabbed to death in a street by her Spanish ex-partner (27) in Madrid.[386]
September 3	Maricel García Valmeo (47)	In Seville, the woman was killed by her ex partner on the street, who tried to commit suicide but was detained. Both were from the Philippines.[387]
September 3	Maria Fernández (53)	In Villanueva del Arzobispo, a man (58) and the woman were found dead from gunshots. [388]
September 3	Tenia (71)	In Palamós, Girona, the partner claims insufficient mental capacity to be tried.[389]
September 11	Sandra (37)	In Granada, stabbed by her partner (43), who was Morocean, who then committed suicide by jumping from a window.[390]
September 15	Suzan Ann (76)	The British woman was stabbed to death in Orihuela Costa with her Norwegian partner (82) being arrested.[391]
September 15	Nicoleta María Lupo (51)	Of Romanian origin, this woman was killed in Castellón by her partner (54) also Romanian, who then hanged himself.[392]
September 16	Hanane (35)	The Moroccan woman was found dead in a well near Cieza, her partner (40), also Moroccan, was detained.[393]
September 11	Laura (41)	In Tarragona, allegedly strangled by her partner (43) who called 112 and claimed he arrived home to find her dead. No 48.[394]
September	Miguela (35)	In Villaverde, Madrid, a man (30) of Dominican nationality with a history of violence against this woman was detained. No 49.[395]
October 10	Paqui ? (52)	Mother of three, from Benalmádena in Andalusia, shot in the back in her home. Her husband (63) was found dead with a shot to the head. A murder suicide.[396]
November 4	Carolina V.C. (39)	Colombian national, knifed in the street in Getafe, near Madrid, her partner was arrested having fled the scene.
November 25	Leticia (37)	Strangled in Madrid by her partner Antonio P.C. (42) an army captain, in the presence of their two young children. He admitted the offence in a 112 call.[397]
November 27	Tatiana Beatriz Ascoy Torres (25)	Stabbed in Madrid by her ex husband who also killed their 5 year old daughter, all Peruvian nationals, he tried to cut his own throat, but survived. He had a restraining order.[398]
November 29	Fátima (34)	Mother of two in Sagunto, Valencia, had her throat cut by her ex husband of 2 years, Abdullah, both from Morocco. The daughter (13) was hurt when trying to get help and fell from the flat.[399]
November	Judith M.G. (37)	A resident of Vigo, found in bushes strangled.
December 1	Encarnación Regueiro Rodríguez (80)	In Sigüeiro, La Coruña, stabbed by her husband Manuel Barbeira Carneiro (88) who then committed suicide using the knife.[400]
December	(58)	Near Cordoba, found dead in her house, having previously warned a neighbour her partner may kill her. The partner was arrested.[401]
