Political

  • Bhumibol Adulyadej was the King of Thailand from 1946 to 2016. He played a significant yet largely symbolic role in supporting the United States and South Vietnam against the spread of communism. As a staunch anti-communist, he endorsed the Thai government's decision to send troops—such as the Queen's Cobras and the Black Panthers to assist U.S. and South Vietnamese forces. Although he did not directly engage in military planning, his approval lent legitimacy to Thailand’s involvement and helped maintain public support for the war effort. King Bhumibol also emphasized regional stability and development, aligning with American strategic interests during the Cold War, while using royal diplomacy to strengthen Thailand's alliance with the West.[2]
  • Sarit Thanarat was the Prime Minister of Thailand from 1958 to 1963 against the communist Pathet Lao guerrillas in the neighboring Kingdom of Laos. During his years as prime minister Sarit was a patron of his cousin, the Lao strongman General Phoumi Nosavan, against the communist Pathet Lao guerrillas in the neighboring Kingdom of Laos.
