Some media outlets said that the meeting "will mark him for his entire political life."[1]
The same day, the Government of Spain recognized Palestine.[2] Abascal promised Netanyahu revert the recognition once in power.[3] Some consider this support as a contrast to Sánchez government.[4][5] Meeting was secret.[6]
Later was known that Abascal changed his agenda on the fly to travel to Israel (he canceled his presence at a rally in Valladolid) and reacted "quickly and effectively" to organize a trip that was "necessary" to "paralyze any attempt to harm the sovereignty of Spain and defend their unity.[7]
Irene Montero, Podemos lead candidate for 2024 European Parliament election in Spain, said that meeting to "do not remain in impunity".[8] Estrella Galán, Sumar lead candidate for same elections, showed a photograph of the meeting during an electoral debate.[9]
Antonio Maíllo, co-coordinator of the United Left (IU), criticized Abascal for the meeting.[10] Óscar Puente, Spanish Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility said in X: "Feijóo has decided to be Abascal's paymaster in these elections. First with Milei. Then with Netanyahu. And he will pay dearly." Íñigo Errejón said "the Spanish extreme right with the Israeli extreme right and its genocidal government".[11] A reader published an op-ed in El Periódico de Catalunya saying "Abascal is very desperate to support Netanyahu".[12] Gerardo Tecé criticized Abascal for the meeting.[13]
Jorge Buxadé thanked Abascal for his "urgent" trip to Israel to "save" Spain from a "serious risk" situation.[14]
Iustitia Europa filed a complaint to Abascal questioning whether the meeting he had with after recognizing Palestine would put Spain's neutrality at risk.[15] In September 2024, the Supreme Court of Spain rejected the complaint.[16]
