It was the inaugural election to Buckinghamshire Council, a unitary authority created on 1 April 2020 as part of structural changes to English local government. Buckinghamshire Council replaced Buckinghamshire County Council, last elected in 2017.

A total of 147 councillors were elected, with 49 wards electing 3 councillors each.[3] In order to secure a majority, a party needed to secure 74 seats. The Conservative Party took an overall majority with 113 seats; the Liberal Democrats came second, with 15 seats.[1]

Background

Due to the postponement of the 2020 local elections until 2021, it was announced on 18 March 2020 that all of the current shadow authority members would become councillors and the shadow executive members would form the cabinet.[4] They remained in post until the inaugural election took place in May 2021.[5]
