El museo, obra del arquitecto Fernando Romero, fue inaugurado en 2011 por el entonces presidente Felipe Calderón Hinojosa. El museo pertenece a la institución cultural homónima y sin fines de lucro, dedicada al resguardo, exposición, investigación y difusión de la colección de arte de Fundación Carlos Slim. El nombre del museo honra la memoria de Soumaya Domit, esposa del fundador del museo, Carlos Slim, fallecida en 1999.
