Yr A Fain

Newidiad yn y llafariad a hir i'r ddeusain äë yw'r A fain. Mae e'n cael ei glywed yn nhafodiaith Gwenhwyseg a thrwy ganolbarth Cymru. Mae'n digwydd hefyd yng ngeiriau gyda unsill a byr fel "mam" yn rhai o dafodieithoedd Maldwyn ond dyw hyn ddim yn digwydd yn y Wenhwyseg. Yn y Wenhwyseg mae'r ddeusain yn digwydd i eiriau gyda'r llythyrau ae yn yr un ffordd hefyd, e.e. Cymraeg > Cymræg, traed > træd, cae > cæ.
Sŵn lafar yn unig yw e, felly does dim llythyr arbennig amdano. Os bydd rhywun eisiau ei ysgrifennu yn arbennig wedyn mae e'n gyffredinol i ddefnyddio æ, äë neu é.
Mae a yn newid i'r ddeusain äë yng Ngwent, Morgannwg a sawl ardal ym Maldwyn a Meirionnydd. Yn y De mae pobl fel arfer yn creu sŵn trwynol wrtho fe. Deusain yw'r A fain a nid yw e'r un sŵn â sŵn mewn geiriau megis 'pen', 'pren', 'pert' ac ati.
Mae'r A fain yn cael ei glywed mewn ychydig o ymadroddiadau enwog fel "y Tæd a'r Mæb a'r Ysbryd Glæn" ("y Tad a'r Mab a'r Ysbryd Glân").
Yn y De, roedd yr A fain fel arfer yn cael ei ddefnyddio ar draws Gwent a Morgannwg[1] (yn y Wenhwyseg) ond dyw e ddim yn gyffredin yn cael ei glywed nawr trwy golli iaith yr ardal ac mae'r Gymraeg sydd newydd dyfu yn yr ardal yn gymysg o dafodieithoedd eraill. Mae e'n byw o hyd ar draws canolbarth Cymru o Fachynlleth i Benybontfawr, yn Nolgellau, ac yr holl ffordd i Harlech.[2]
Mae nodweddion yr ynganiad Gwenhwyseg yn nhafodiaith Saesneg Gwent a Morgannwg hefyd, yn enwedig yn ardal Caerdydd, lle mae e'n nodwedd o'r acen Caerdydd ac mae pobl yn meddwl fod e'n sŵn eithaf dosbarth gweithiol (felly mae e'n dechrau diflannu hefyd). Roedd e'n gyffredinol iawn i ddefnyddio æ yn lle a yn Saesneg yng Nghaerdydd, fel yn yr ymadroddion "'ærf a dærk" ("half a dark") neu "Cærdiff Ærms Pærk" ("Cardiff Arms Park").
