Roedd Syr William Ouseley HFRSE FSAScot (1767 - Medi, 1842), yn arbenigwr ar ddiwylliant gwledydd y dwyrain.[1]

Ganwyd Ouseley yn Sir Fynwy, yn fab hynaf y Capten Ralph Ouseley a'i wraig Elizabeth (née Holland). Cafodd ei addysgu gartref yng nghwmni ei frawd, Gore a'i gefnder, Gideon Ouseley. Cafodd y tri ohonynt yrfaoedd nodedig.
Ym 1787 aeth i Baris i ddysgu Ffrangeg, ac yno gosododd sylfaen ei ddiddordeb mewn llenyddiaeth Persia. Yn 1788 daeth yn gorned, (swyddog iau gyda'r marchfilwyr), yn 8fed gatrawd y dragŵn. Ar ddiwedd 1794 gwerthodd ei gomisiwn ac aeth i Leiden i astudio Perseg. Wedi dychwelyd i Ynysoedd Prydain dychwelodd i wasanaeth milwrol fel uwchgapten yng nghatrawd dragŵn Arglwydd Ayr wedi'i leoli yng Nghaerliwelydd.
Ym 1798 roedd yn byw yng Nghrucywel lle byddai, yn y pen draw, yn cyhoeddi ei gyfres o lyfrau Travels in Various Countries of Middle East a chafodd eu hargraffu'n lleol hefyd.[2]
Pan anfonwyd ei frawd iau, Syr Gore Ouseley, ym 1810, i wasanaethu fel Llysgennad i'r hyn a elwid ar y pryd yn Persia (Iran bellach), aeth Syr William gydag ef fel ei ysgrifennydd.[3] Arhosodd yno hyd 1812 cyn dychwelyd i Grucywel ym 1813.
Priododd Julia Frances Irving ym 1796 bu iddynt tri mab a chwe merch. Yr hynaf oedd Syr William Gore Ouseley a oedd yn ddiplomydd yn Ne America ac yn arlunydd enwog.[4]
Derbyniodd gradd LL.D. er anrhydedd o Brifysgol Dulyn ym 1797 a PhD o Brifysgol Rostock. Ym 1800 cafodd ei urddo'n farchog gan Charles yr Arglwydd Cornwallis (1738-1805), a oedd rhwng 1786 a 1793 wedi bod yn Llywodraethwr Cyffredinol India. Cafodd ei urddo fel cydnabyddiaeth am ei waith yn hyrwyddo astudiaethau dwyreiniol.
Roedd yn gymrawd anrhydeddus o gymdeithasau brenhinol Caeredin, Göttingen, ac Amsterdam, ac yn aelod o Gymdeithas Asiatig Bengal.[5]
