Ganwyd Richard yn 1920 i'w fam, Kate, a'i dad Richard a fu farw o fewn tri mis i enedigaeth Richard. Ailbriododd ei fam o fewn ychydig. Nid oedd gan Richard frodyr na chwiorydd, heblaw am ei gyfneither Margaret, ac oedd gystal a chwaer iddo.
Magwyd Richard yn Mynytho, lle yr aeth i Ysgol Foel Gron. Ni adawodd ardal ei fagwraeth. Yn 1952 priododd hefo Laura Ellen Jones, a daeth yn dad i ddau o blant, Sian a Dafydd. Bu Richard yn gweithio mewn llawer o swyddi, o werthu yswiriant i fod yn athro yn Ysgol Pont-y-Gof. Bu farw yng nghartref gofal Glyn Menai ar y 4ydd o Fawrth, 2013.
Yn ei flynyddoedd cynnar, yr oedd yn aelod adnabyddus o'r gymuned, yn aml yn cymryd rhan mewn eisteddfodau o gwmpas y wlad. Enillodd y gadair ychydig o weithiau. Cyhoeddodd lawer o lyfrau o'i farddoniaeth, yn cynnwys Hanes y Daith, a hefyd llyfr am y gofod. Roedd yn fwyaf adnabyddus am lunio englynion. Cyfeirir ato yn y Cydymaith i Lenyddiaeth. Gwelir peth o'i waith yn Awen Arfon.[1] Bu hefyd yn golygu Llen y Llanw.[2]
