Staročeské žiezě vedle žiezn, žiezen, žiezeň (asi pod vlivem žizn, žizen, žizeň 'život, hojnost, osvěžení'). Polské żądza 'žádostivost, touha', ruské жажда (žážda) 'žízeň' (z círekevní slovanštiny, jinak staroruské žaža), srbochorvatské žêđa, staroslověnské žęžda. Praslovanské *žęďa, vlastně 'touha, chtivost (pít)', je odvozeno od *žędati (viz žádat).[1]
