Та́ртар[1] (стар.-грэч.: Τάρταρος) — у старажытнагрэчаскай міфалогіі[2] — найглыбейшая бездань, а таксама яе чароўная персаніфікацыя, якая знаходзіцца пад Аідам, куды пасля тытанамахіі Зеўс зрынуў Кронаса і тытанаў, і дзе іх пільнавалі сторукія волаты Гекатанхейры, дзеці Урана. Там жа былі заменчаны старэйшыя кіклопы[3]. Адзінымі, хто мог выйсці адтуль, былі Нікта і яе нашчадкі.
Гэта цёмная бездань, якая настолькі ж аддалена ад паверхні зямлі, наколькі ад зямлі неба: па словах Гесіёда, меднае кавадла ляцела б ад паверхні зямлі да Тартара на працягу 9 дзён. Тартар быў акружаны патройным пластом цемры і жалезнаю сцяной з жалезнымі варотамі, узведзенымі Пасейдонам.
Паводле Гесіёда, узнік услед за Хаосам і Геяй[4]. Паводле Эпіменіда, народжаны ад Аэра і Нікты[5]. Паводле іншых аўтараў, як персаніфікацыя гэтай бездані, Тартар быў сынам Эфіру і Геі.
У пазнейшыя часы значэнне Тартара змянілася: пад ім сталі мець на ўвазе ніжнія прасторы ў царстве грэшнікаў.
У сярэднявечча тартарам сталі зваць найбольш закінутыя і аддаленыя куткі зямлі. Гл. таксама Тартарыя.
Таксама ў «Цэнтурыях» Настрадамуса Тартар згадваецца як прапашчае месца, якому мае быць перажыць небывалы росквіт.
У наш час можна пачуць выраз «праваліцца ў тартарары», што азначае тое ж, што і «праваліцца пад зямлю», гэта значыць «знікнуць», «перастаць існаваць».
