魚鴞屬由法國博物學家勒內-普里梅韋勒·萊松於1831年創建，包含從爪哇和印度的魚鴞。^[1]其模式種為馬來漁鴞（Strix ketupa）^[2]屬名源自馬來漁鴞的馬來語名「Ketupok」。^[3]
