婦女參政運動者

婦女參政運動者（英語：Suffragettes）指19世紀末20世紀初提倡擴大女性在公共選舉中選舉權利組織的成員，特別指婦女社會政治聯盟（英語：Women's Social and Political Union）（WSPU）成員等英國的激進分子。婦女政權論者（Suffragist）是婦女參政運動成員的總稱。

「婦女參政運動者」一詞跟艾米琳·潘克斯特和克麗絲特貝爾·潘克斯特領導的WSPU關係尤為密切，他們深受絕食等俄羅斯式抗議手段影響。儘管1881年曼島授予持有資產的女性在該島議會中投票的權利，但紐西蘭到1893年才成為首個賦予所有21歲以上女性在議會選舉中投票權利的自治國家。在當時隸屬英國的澳洲，南澳大利亞於1895年女性也獲得同樣的權利，並獲得派代表參與議會的權利，西澳大利亞於1899年通過類似法律賦予女性投票權。直到1902年，澳大利亞聯邦成立，法律賦予全體女性在全國範圍的選舉中享有參選和投票權。但澳洲原住民直到1962年才正式獲得投票權。

在美國，西部地區懷俄明州和猶他州分別於1869年1870年允許21歲以上白人女性投票，到1919年除南部各州外，所有州的婦女都獲得投票權。隨著1920年第十九修正案的生效，婦女選舉擴大到全美各地，當時適逢1920年大選。自1919年開始，加拿大21歲以上婦女獲准投票。

1918年，英國30歲以上的婦女若符合一定的財產資格都獲得投票權；到1928年，婦女選舉權擴大到21歲以上的所有婦女。^[1]

起源

1915年紐約婦女參政運動者遊行

英國婦女參政運動者大多出身於上層和中產階級背景，對她們的社會和經濟環境感到沮喪。她們為求社會內部變革，在約翰·斯圖亞特·密爾等人倡導婦女權利作品的伴隨下作出鬥爭，這足以發起一場匯集為選舉權鬥爭的女性群體組織的運動。1865年，密爾在英國選民發表演說時介紹了婦女參政權的理念^[2]。隨後為同樣的理由而鬥爭的無數男女加入密爾。

「婦女參政運動者」一詞起先被《每日郵報》記者查爾斯·E.漢斯（Charles E. Hands）用作諷刺詞語來形容婦女參政運動者運動中的積極分子，尤其是婦女社會政治聯盟的成員^[3]。但他打算嘲笑的婦女們將這個詞改為「suffraGETtes」（強調g），暗示她們不僅想投票，而且打算得到投票權^[4]。

全國婦女選舉權聯盟成立於1897年，由當地婦女參政運動者社團組成。聯盟領導者米莉森特·福西特堅持修憲運動，散發宣傳單張，組織會議，遞交請願信，但運動收效甚微。1903年，艾米琳·潘克斯特組建新組織婦女社會政治聯盟。她認為這場運動如果要起到效果，必須變得激進和好戰^[5]。

參與者採用了過激的手段^[6]，尤其是從沙皇手下逃到英國的俄國流亡者那兒學會了絕食。當時的許多婦女參政運動者以及自那時起的大多數歷史學家都認為激進份子的行為違背了她們的初衷^[7]。當時看到證據的反對者認為女性太過情緒化，不能像男性那樣用邏輯思考問題^{[8][9][10][11][12]}。

發展過程

1909年，WSPU發售紙牌遊戲「Pank-A-Squith」，以提高運動的關注度並籌集資金。紙牌遊戲設計成螺旋狀，玩家必須帶領她們的人偶穿過首相H·H·阿斯奎斯和自由黨政府的障礙，從家裡前往議會。曼徹斯特人民歷史博物館在主長廊展出了一套紙牌遊戲和供遊客把玩的複製版^[13]。

1912年是英國婦女參政運動者的轉折點，她們轉而採用更加激進的戰術，把自己綁在欄杆上、對郵筒縱火、砸碎窗戶，還不時發動炸彈襲擊^[14]。1914年，全英至少有七座教堂被炸彈襲擊或縱火，其中，西敏寺發生一次爆炸，目標是有700年歷史的聖愛德華寶座。寶座儘管靠近炸彈，但只受了輕微的損傷，得以保存下來^[15]。

在1913年6月4日的埃普瑟姆德比大賽上，女權主義者埃米莉·戴維森死於喬治五世的馬安默（Anmer）的馬蹄下。艾米莉是否把寫著「為婦女投票」的旗幟釘在馬上引發了爭論^[16]。她們的許多同行被監禁，把拒絕進食作為對抗政府的恐怖策略。當時由阿斯奎斯領導的自由黨政府以貓捉老鼠法作為回應。另外一名突出的英國婦女參政運動者索菲亞·杜雷普·辛格（英語：Sophia Duleep Singh）幾乎被遺忘了70年^[17]。
