在粉蝶科的演化支中,黃粉蝶亞科與粉蝶亞科屬同一演化支,即是相互的姐妹群,於白堊紀晚期(約7,500萬)年前演化形成[1]。
黃粉蝶亞科有兩大演化支,傳統上演化出12個屬,它們都在古近紀至新近紀演化形成(1,500-5,000萬年前)。現今的黃蝶屬和菲粉蝶屬各自細分出新的屬級分類(Abaeis、Pyrisitia、Teriocolias;Aphrissa、Prestonia、Rhabdodryas)[2],親緣關係尚待進一步研究。所有分類的演化關係如下[1]:
