319年，石勒稱趙王，建立後趙政權，以郭殷為右司馬。330年，石勒稱帝，以郭殷為尚書。石勒之子石弘即位，郭殷為尚書右僕射。334年，郭殷奉石虎之命，郭殷入宮，廢石弘為海陽王。石虎稱居攝趙天王，任郭殷為司空。
