「科學主義」這個詞曾被社會科學家如弗里德里希·哈耶克、科學哲學家如卡爾·波普爾和哲學家如希拉蕊·普特南和茨維坦·托多洛夫使用,用來描述許多科學家所共有的態度和信念,這一信念讓自然科學的研究和其所採用的方法終於上升到意識形態的水平[2]。對科學主義的經典論述,正如物理學家歐內斯特·盧瑟福所言[3]:除物理,皆集郵(There is physics, and there is stamp-collecting)。
Mikael Stenmark提出用「科學擴張主義」作為科學主義的代名詞[13]。在《科學和宗教百科全書》中,他寫道,雖然科學主義的理論有著多種可能的形式和不同程度的變化,但它們共通的思想是,科學(或通常所稱的自然科學)的邊界應當擴展,使一些過去一直沒有被認作為科學相關的主題,現在 (在科學主義下) 可以理解為科學的一部分(並且通常無論探討維度和廣度,科學將成為唯一的標準)[13]。
