生平
毕业于哈佛大学历史和东亚语言的博士学位。主要研究兴趣在于现代中国和日本的社会史、经济史、边疆史和世界历史，撰写过关于中国粮食市场，农业发展和环境历史的文章。2007年当选美国文理科学院院士。[1]
著作
他出版过两本广受好评的书：Exhausting the Earth: State and Peasant in Hunan 1500-1850 A.D（《疲惫的大地：1500-1850年间国家与湖南的农民》）和China Marches West: The Qing Conquest of Central Eurasia（《中国西征：清朝对欧亚大陆腹地的征服》）。后者获得2007年列文森图书奖[2]，中译本《中国西征：大清征服中央欧亚与蒙古帝国的最后挽歌》于2021年1月27日由读书共和国及卫城出版社出版[3]。
