小熊座Z是在1934年发现的变星^[6]。由于它是红色，且变化周期为数百天，因此起初被认为可能是刍藁变星^[7]。在1985年发表的一项调查中，发现它是一颗碳星^[8]，后来又发现它也缺乏氢^[6]。在1992年，它的亮度消退6星等，因此被归类为北冕座R型变星 ^[9]。在2006年，对其频谱进行分析后，它被确认是北冕座R型变星，并且是已知的此型变星中温度最低的之一^[4]。
