语言威望是社会语言学中的一个概念,指一种语言变体(方言或者语言)同其他变体比起来“更有威望”,而且更有威望的语言变体往往就是标准方言。[1][2]例如20世纪时,许多人认为英式英文与美式英文是比较“正统”的英文,这些人觉得其他英文变体就是“不正统”、“古怪”、“错”,加拿大英文会被美国人认为是英式英文,但同时又被一些欧洲人误以为是美式英文,甚至误以为有些用法根本就是用错了,而北美原住民英文同样被非原住民认为“格式写错”,非裔美国英文也被一些人认为是“低俗难登大雅之堂”。
