啮形大目

啮形大目（学名：Glires），是咬食性哺乳动物的总称，包含了啮齿目和兔形目等演化支。其中啮齿目的代表动物有松鼠、河狸、鼠、豪猪等，兔形目的代表动物有家兔、野兔和鼠兔等^[1]。

啮齿动物的数量占哺乳动物总数的38%

对啮齿动物是一个单系群的假定，长久以来都存在着很大的争议，尽管最近的形态学研究强烈地支持啮齿动物是单系群的^[2][3]。新的化石发现填补了啮齿目和兔形目之间的裂缝^[3][4]。细胞核DNA的资料支持啮齿动物是灵长动物的旁系群，且两者组成灵长总目^[5][6]，但有些从细胞核和线粒体DNA得出的基因资料却对此论点较少支持^[7]。一份对逆转位子存在/消失的研究则无疑地支持了啮齿动物的假定^[8]。根据分子学的研究成果，啮齿动物在灵长总目内的亲缘关系可能是：

世界上啮齿动物的种类或个体数量可能比其他所有哺乳动物加起来还要多，啮齿动物包括：海狸、花栗鼠、老鼠、豪猪以及松鼠等^[9]。水豚是世界上最大的啮齿类生物，原产于南美洲的稀树草原和丛林中^[10][11]。

特征

兔形目与啮齿目一样都有可以不断生长的门齿，没有犬齿，其生活习性也和典型的啮齿目比较相似^[12]。不同的是啮齿目上下颚各只有一对门齿，而兔形目则有2对上门齿^[13]。
