Debian从4.0（Etch）版本开始默认安装Iceweasel，代替Firefox。创建此再发布版的起因是Mozilla组织注册了“Firefox”商标并增加了多项品牌使用限制。Debian组织最终选择了放弃使用Firefox商标，另行创建一个用于Debian发行版的“Iceweasel”标识并进行维护。这一分歧已于2016年解决，而Parabola GNU/Linux-libre的开发者接手了此项目，并继续维护。[1]
在2016年六月执行dist-upgrade的Debian用户会收到如下系统消息。PC World的Chris Hoffman评论道：“十年之后，Debian与Mozilla终于冰释前嫌，Iceweasel也取回了自己本身的名字”[2]

* The iceweasel package was replaced with the firefox-esr package.
* Preferences under /etc/iceweasel/prefs will need to be copied manually
to /etc/firefox-esr.
