23S rRNA是一個長為2904nt（在大腸桿菌中）的細菌核糖體大亞基（50S亞基）組分。核糖體的肽基轉移酶活性中心就位於此rRNA的第五結構域（domain V），而此結構域也是許多抑制轉錄的抗生素的常見作用位點。這一類抗生素包括著名的氯黴素，通過抑制肽鍵形成來發揮作用。利奈唑胺和奎奴普汀/達福普汀（英語：Quinupristin/dalfopristin）也能結合於23S rRNA。
