1971年瓦特·庫姆斯(Walter Coombs)將倍甲龍、刺甲龍、無齒甲龍定義為包頭龍的異名,因為歸入倍甲龍的四個下頜之一與包頭龍標本的下頜一模一樣,但沒有指出其他作為異名的鑑定特徵來解釋。[7]2009年維多莉亞·奧柏爾(英語:Victoria Arbour)等人發表了倍甲龍的重新描述,認為這是一個有效的物種,並解釋之前是因為正模標本及其他包頭龍標本的破碎狀態而導致異名的觀點。[2]2011年湯普森等人證實彼此的獨立性並將倍甲龍列為魔頭繪龍的姊妹分類單元。[8]2015年奧柏爾和菲力·柯里(英語:Phillip J.
