「死於椰子」的說法來源是彼得·巴斯博士(Dr. Peter Barss)於1984年在《創傷雜誌》(現在稱為《創傷和急性外科護理雜誌》)上發表的一篇題為「椰子掉落所造成的傷害」的研究論文。[9] 巴斯博士在他的論文中提到,他在巴布亞新幾內亞觀察研究這四年來,有2.5%的創傷性住院患者皆是因掉落的椰子而受傷,但沒有一個是造成死亡的,但他提到了兩個關於死亡的傳聞,有一個是發生在很久以前的。[10] 這個死亡數字後來被人錯誤並誇張的曲解為了150人,因為那些人認為其他地方也會遭遇類似死於椰子案例。[11]2012年3月,巴斯博士獲得了由《不可思議研究年報》(英語:Annals of Improbable Research)頒發的「搞笑諾貝爾獎」,以表彰他拿「不會被模仿」的研究。對於此獎項,巴斯博士向《加拿大醫學協會雜誌》(英語:Canadian Medical Association Journal)表示:「當你每天都在治療這些因椰子造成的創傷時,那這一點其實一點也不搞笑」。[12]
巴斯博士的研究報告發表後,關於椰子致死的死亡人數誇大說法開始蔓延。關於椰子致死的報道也變得如此普遍,致力於報道和揭露都市傳說的問答式報刊《真實訊息》(英語:The Straight Dope)發表了一篇名為《新的都市傳說!死於椰子》的專欄。[13] 作家喬爾 · 貝斯特(Joel Bes)將椰子造成的大面積死亡的說法描述為「新聞界的當代傳奇都市傳說」。[14] 鯊魚研究所(Shark Research Institute)的一項分析援引了英國旅遊保險公司Club Travel的一份新聞稿,稱其為了向前往巴布亞新幾內亞的個人推銷旅遊保險,在發佈會上稱椰子的危險性是鯊魚的10倍,這樣的說法更助力了都市傳說的傳播。[11] 2002年5月,全球鯊魚襲擊檔案(英語:International Shark Attack File)的負責人喬治·H·伯吉斯(英語:George H. Burgess)聲稱「全世界每年有150人死於椰子」,椰子致死的都市傳說再一次被大眾注意。[15]
