聯合王國及自治領國王兼印度皇帝喬治六世於1952年2月6日駕崩。其葬禮於1952年2月15日在溫莎城堡聖佐治禮拜堂舉行，並葬於英國英格蘭溫莎城堡聖佐治教堂皇家墓室，後在1969年3月26日遷入喬治六世紀念禮拜堂。

由於煙癮且二戰期間操煩國事，喬治六世患有肺癌、動脈硬化以及血栓閉塞性脈管炎。喬治於1951年9月23日進行了肺部切除手術後不曾完全康復。1952年2月5日，喬治與家人在桑德靈厄姆宮用餐後，於晚上10時30分入睡。次日早上7時30分，喬治被發現已在睡夢中駕崩。之後此消息也以「海德公園角」為代號，經由電話傳達至白金漢宮。
