阿齊基韋1904年11月16日出生於尼日利亞宗蓋魯,父母是伊博人(Igbo),父親奧貝德-埃多姆·楚克沃梅卡·阿齊基韋(Obed-Edom Chukwuemeka Azikiwe)[3](1879–1958),尼日利亞英國殖民政府的一個小職員。[4]母親名為拉切爾·奧格本亞努·阿齊基韋(Rachel Ogbenyeanu Azikiwe)。[3]納姆迪在伊博語里的意思是「我的父親活着」("My father is alive")。[5]
