生平
早年與常袞友善。大曆初登進士第。曾任太子通事舍人、國子博士[2]，後任江陰縣令。大曆十二年（777年），常袞拜相，以叔向為左拾遺、內供奉[3]。大曆十四年，常袞罷相，叔向亦出京任溧水縣（治今江蘇省溧水縣）縣令。竇叔向逝世後，追贈工部尚書[4]。有《竇叔向集》七卷，已佚。《全唐詩》存詩九首。娶給事中袁高妹，有五子竇常、竇牟、竇羣、竇庠、竇鞏俱以文學有名於當時。
