河南江北行中書省任命他為三叉口水、馬站提領。父親杜成在家患病，杜佑忽覺心驚，渾身流汗，於是棄職歸家。父親剛剛患病三日，於是他禱神請求以自己替代，而且嘗父親的糞便來檢驗病情。父親去世，在墓側結廬盡哀，有吉兆的馴兔出現。
