TiS2為碘化鎘 (CdI2)結構。一半的八面體空隙都被 Ti4+填充。[2][3]每個鈦都和六個硫配位,形成八面體結構。每個硫都和三個鈦連接,形成為三角錐結構。其它二硫屬化物都有類似的結構,但有些,例如MoS2不是這種結構。[3] 二硫化鈦的空間群為P3m1.[4]Ti-S鍵的鍵長為2.423 Å。[5]
二硫化鈦可以由硫和鈦在 500 °C下反應而成。[6]
- Ti + 2 S → TiS2
更容易的製備方法是反應四氯化鈦和硫化氫,但純度會比直接反應低。[6]
- TiCl4 + 2 H2S → TiS2 + 4 HCl
這個反應已應用於化學蒸汽沉積形成TiS2薄膜。硫醇和有機二硫化物可以代替硫化氫。[7]
其它硫化鈦也是已知的。[8]
TiS2 在空氣中不穩定。[6]加熱時,它會被氧化成二氧化鈦:
- TiS2 + O2 → TiO2 + 2 S
TiS2 也對水敏感:
- TiS2 + 2H2O → TiO2 + 2 H2S
加熱時,TiS2 放出硫,形成三硫化二鈦:
- 2 TiS2 → Ti2S3 + S
