在中醫學，胃為六腑之一，和五臟中的脾爲表裏。功能主要是受納和腐熟水谷，因此有「水谷之海」(《靈樞·海論》)之稱；飲食物經過胃而下送小腸，故胃以通降為順；人體的氣血、津液等為食物中營養物質所化生，首先依靠胃的受納，故胃氣的強弱對保持人體健康和疾病的預後有重要關係。
