「熊」這個同時俚語由理查德·巴格(英語:Richard Bulger)推廣而變得流行,他和他的伴侶查理斯·尼爾森(英語:Chris Nelson (photographer))在1987年創辦了《熊刊(英語:Bear Magazine)》。但是就熊族術語的起源及其亞文化的定義是否由巴格完成也由爭議。喬治·馬澤伊(George Mazzei)在1979年為雜誌《倡導》撰寫了一篇名為《動物園明寵錄(Who's Who in the Zoo?)》的文章,[1] 文章將定義了七種類型的同性戀,並給他們對應上某種動物的名字,而熊族也在其中。[2]
