「熊」這個同時俚語由理查德·巴格（英語：Richard Bulger）推廣而變得流行，他和他的伴侶查理斯·尼爾森（英語：Chris Nelson (photographer)）在1987年創辦了《熊刊（英語：Bear Magazine）》。但是就熊族術語的起源及其亞文化的定義是否由巴格完成也由爭議。喬治·馬澤伊（George Mazzei）在1979年為雜誌《倡導》撰寫了一篇名為《動物園明寵錄（Who's Who in the Zoo?）》的文章，[1] 文章將定義了七種類型的同性戀，並給他們對應上某種動物的名字，而熊族也在其中。[2]
