生平
费斯米尔于1959年出生于乔治亚州亚特兰大,在田纳西州查塔努加长大,1978年以高中毕业代表的身份从贝勒学校毕业。1981年,他以优异成绩毕业于哈佛学院。费斯米尔于1985年毕业于范德堡大学医学院(英语:Vanderbilt University School of Medicine),1988年在佛罗里达州杰克逊维尔大学医院完成急诊医学住院医师培训,并获得优秀住院医师奖[25]。1992年,费斯米尔当选为美国急诊医师学会(英语:American College of Emergency Physicians)会士[25]。1988年至1991年,他在查塔努加纪念医院担任急诊医生。1991年至2014年去世,他在厄兰格男爵夫人医院(英语:Erlanger Health System)执业。
荣誉
1996年,费斯米尔获得急诊医学基金会的青年研究员奖,以表彰他在制定胸痛患者快速评估方案方面所做的工作[26]。2006年,他因1988年的一份病例报告获得搞笑诺贝尔奖的医学奖,该报告详细介绍使用数位直肠按摩治疗顽固性单侧呃逆(打嗝)的方法[27][28]。2008 年,费斯米尔被美国急诊医师学会评为急诊医学英雄[1][26]。

晚年生活
去世时,费斯米尔与妻子和两个儿子住在查塔努加。他是厄兰格医疗中心胸痛中心的医疗主任(英语:Medical director)[30]。他也是田纳西大学医学院(英语:University of Tennessee College of Medicine)[30]急诊医学住院医师培训计划[31]的教授和临床研究主任,以及美国急诊医师学会临床政策委员会主席[32]。
