龍者，鱗蟲之長[1]，天地之靈獸也。位列十二地支，亦列四靈。能幽能明，能細能巨，能短能長，其於春分而登天，抵秋分而潛淵。其角似鹿、頭似牛、目似蝦、嘴似驢、腹似蛇、鱗似魚、足似鳳、鬚似人、耳似象，其形多異能，是故祥瑞兆也[2]。
其性剛烈而仁慈，喜雨而惡暴，喜音而惡鬧。其聲如雷，其氣如雲，其目如日，其鱗如珠。天地之間，無不畏其威而敬其德。古之聖人，皆以龍為象，以示其高明之德與玄妙之道。
龍之所在，風雨隨之。龍之所好，珠玉為之。龍之所怒，山河崩裂。龍之所悲，江海泣血。龍有九子，曰囚牛，曰睚眥，曰嘲風，曰蒲牢，曰狻猊，曰贔屭，曰狴犴，曰負屭，曰螭吻，各有所好。[3]
