蟋蟀，又名促織，昆蟲。於生學也，屬直翅目。齧食莖葉種實根。體或黑或褐。首有長觸角。後足粗大，善跳躍。其雄者好爭鬥，兩翅摩擦能聲。多晝伏夜出。
昔《葩經》詠昆蟲甚夥，而蟋蟀見於《唐什》，詳於《邠風》。自李唐來宮中為蟋蟀戲，傳至外間，人爭效之，然辨形辨色之說，究未通曉。至宋賈秋壑著《促織經》，所謂形色始詳論焉。[1]
