Niqob — maskarad, karnaval qatnashchisining oʻzini tanitmaslik uchun yuziga kiyadigan (koʻz oʻrni ochiqboʻlgan), baʼzan odam basharasini, xdyvon yoki afsonaviy maxduq boshini tasvirlay-digan maxsus krplama. Hozirgi N.lar magʻ-zi soxta, plastmassa, rezina va boshqa ma-teriallardan yasaladi. N. kad. zamonlarda ov qilingan hayvon va qushlarning ta-biiy kallalari, poʻstaklari va patlaridan yasalgan. Odam timsollarini koʻrsatishda kalla suyaklari ishlatilgan. Keyinchalik ular oʻlgan kishini eslash va ajdodlar ruhiga sigʻinish bilan bogʻliq marosimlarda qoʻllanuvchi shartli tasvirlar bilan almashtirilgan. Yunon va Rim teatrida, Shark, mamla-katlari va qad. Xorazm, Baqtriya, Par-kona (Davan), Soʻgʻdiyona davlatlaridagi anʼanaviy shakldagi teatrlarda N.dan keng foydalanilgan. Afrosiyob, Xolchayon, Oyxonim, Tuproqqalʼa kabi qad. shaharlardan topilgan N. tasvirlari shundan dalolatdir. Arxeologik qazishlar natijasida Afrosiyobdan (1 -a.) qoʻlida N. ushlab turgan toʻrt aktyorning tasviri, Tuproqqalʼadan (3asr) masharaboz N.i topilgan. U rta asrlarda N. masharabozlar teatrida keng qoʻllangan. Xorazm masharabozlari "Xatarli oʻyin" degan turkum tomoshalarida shu kungacha N.dan foydalanib keladilar. Mamlakatning boshqa joylarida N. dor masharabozlari tomoshalarida uchraydi. Hindiston, Xitoy, Yaponiya va boshqalarning zamonaviy teatrlarida N. oʻrniga koʻpincha niqobsimon grimlardan foydalaniladi. Shuningdek, bu mamlakatlar va baʼzi Afrika xalqlari tomoshalarida ot, sher, ajdarqo va boshqa hayvon hamda afsonaviy mavjudotlar ifodalangan N. liboslar keng tarqalgan (yana qarang Maska).
