Stockwell, 5 Mart 1936'da Kuzey Hollywood, Los Angeles'ta doğdu.[4][5] 1945'te çocuk oyuncu olarak başlayıp 2021 yılındaki ölümüne kadar 70 seneyi aşan süre boyunca sürdürdüğü aktif oyunculuk kariyerinde en çok rol aldığı Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer yapımı; Anchors Aweigh (1945), The Green Years (1946), Gentleman's Agreement (1947) ve Kim (1950) gibi sinema filmleriyle tanındı.[6][7]
Stockwell, ayrıca TV dizileri; Quantum Leap ve Battlestar Gallactica ile ekranlara geldi.[8]
Stockwell, 7 Kasım 2021'de Whangarei, Yeni Zelanda'daki aile evinde doğal nedenlerden 85 yaşında öldü.[9][10]
