Marie-Louise Ida Margareta von Franz lindi në Mynih, Gjermani, bijë e një koloneli të ushtrisë Austriake.[1]
Pas Luftës së Parë Botërore, në vitin 1919, familja e saj u shpërngul në Zvicër, pranë St. Gallen. Nga viti 1928, ajo jetoi në Cyrih, së bashku me motrën e saj më të madhe, në mënyrë që të dyja të mund të ndjekin një shkollë të mesme (gjimnazin) në Cyrih, duke specializuar në gjuhë dhe letërsi. Tre vjet më vonë, edhe prindërit e saj u zhvendosën në Cyrih.[2]:xxxvi
Von Franz punoi me Carl Jung, të cilin e takoi në vitin 1933 dhe me të cilin bashkëpunoi deri në vdekjen e tij më 1961.[3]
Nga viti 1942 deri në vdekjen e saj, Marie-Louise von Franz punoi si analiste psikologjike, kryesisht në Küsnacht, Zvicër. Në vitin 1987, ajo deklaroi se kishte interpretuar mbi 65,000 ëndrra.[4]
Ajo shkroi më shumë se 20 libra mbi psikologjinë analitike, sidomos në përralla, pasi ato lidhen me psikologjinë arketipale dhe me psikologjinë e thellë. Ajo përforcoi temat dhe personazhet e këtyre tregimeve dhe u përqendrua në tema të tilla si problemi i së keqes, ndryshimi i qëndrimit ndaj arketipit të femrës.[5]
