Peonia ose Paionia ishte vendi dhe mbretëria antike e paionëve - peonëve (Παίονες) një grup fisesh ilire që banonin në luginën e sipërme të Aksiosit (Vardari) dhe degëve të tij, duke u shtrirë në lindje deri te lugina e Strymonit (Struma) në kufi me fise trake, në perëndim deri tek dardanët, penestët dhe dasaretët e Ilirisë. Kufijtë e saktë origjinalë të Paeonisë, si historia e hershme e banorëve të saj, janë të paqarta, por dihet që afërsisht i korrespondon pjesës më të madhe të Maqedonisë Veriore të sotme dhe pjesëve veri-qendrore të Maqedonisë Greke (d.m.th. ndoshta komunat greke të Paionia, Almopia, Sintiki, Irakleia, dhe Serres ), dhe një pjesë e vogël e Bullgarisë jug-perëndimore. [2] [3] [4] [5] Autorët antikë e vendosën atë në jug të Dardanisë (një zonë që korrespondon me Kosovën e sotme dhe Maqedoninë Veriore), në perëndim të maleve Thrakiane dhe në lindje të Ilirëve më jugorë. [6] Ajo u nda nga Dardania me malet nëpër të cilat kalon lumi Vardar nga fusha e Scupit ( Shkupi modern) në luginën Bylazora (afër Sveti Nikollës moderne).
Në Iliada, Peonianët thuhet se kanë qenë aleatë të trojanëve . Gjatë pushtimit persian të Greqisë, Paeonasit e pushtuar deri në Liqenin Prasias, përfshirë Paeoplae dhe Siropaiones, u dëbuan nga Paeonia në Azi. [7]
Në vitin 355–354 p.e.s. Filipi II i Maqedonisë shfrytëzoi vdekjen e mbretit Agi të Paeonisë dhe bëri fushatë kundër tyre për t'i pushtuar ata. Kështu që pjesa jugore e Paeonisë antike u aneksua nga mbretëria antike e Maqedonisë dhe u emërua "Paeonia e Maqedonisë"; kjo pjesë përfshinte qytetet Astraion (më vonë Stromnitsa), Stenae (afër Demir Kapija moderne), Antigoneia (afër Negotinës moderne), etj.
