Akadi ishte një nga qytetet kryesore, së bashku me Babiloninë dhe Erekun, që i themeloi Nimrodi.[1] Quhej edhe Agade.
Mbishkrimet tregojnë se atje lulëzoi një dinasti e hershme semitike e themeluar nga Sargoni I (rreth vitit 2350 p.e.s.). Në atë kohë Akadi kontrolloi tërë territorin e Sumerit (Babiloninë jugore) dhe ushtritë e tij depërtuan deri në Siri, Elam dhe Anadollinë jugore. Falë tregtisë së madhe dhe lulëzimit që pasoi pas sundimit te Sargonit dhe pasardhësit e tij, Naram Sinit, dinastia e Akadit u bë simbolike për epokën e artë. Më vonë, kur Babilonia u bë kryeqytet, emri Akad vazhdonte të përdorej për të shënuar mbarë Babiloninë veriore deri në epokën e mëvonshme persike në regjistrimet e Asirisë dhe Babilonisë.
Gjuha akade përdoret për të shënuar gjuhët semitike të Asirisë dhe Babilonisë, kurse dialekti i dinastisë akadiane quhet akadian i vjetër.
