Leží v Rimavskom podolí, na pravom brehu Rimavy, na rozhraní Stolických vrchov a Revúckej vrchoviny, v nadmorskej výške 290 m n. m.. Od centra mesta je vzdialená asi 1,5 kilometra na juh.
Ako samostatná obec sa prvýkrát spomína v roku 1438. V 19. storočí sa rozvíjal železiarsky priemysel, ktorý bol v neskoršom období utlmený a vybudoval sa chemický priemysel. Obec bola v roku 1960 zlúčená s Hnúšťou do jedného celku s názvom Hnúšťa-Likier. V roku 1971, keď boli k mestu pričlenené ďalšie okolité obce, došlo aj k zmene názvu mesta Hnúšťa[1].
Obec sa nachádza pri ceste I/72 a železničnej trati č. 173. Je tu železničná zastávka.
