V roku 1988 obdržal spolu s Jack Steinbergerom a Melvinom Schwartzom Nobelovu cenu za fyziku[2] za metódu neutrínového zväzku a demonštráciu existencie leptónových dubletov objavom miónového neutrína.
Bol známy aj tým, že vo svojej knihe The God Particle: If the Universe Is the Answer, What Is the Question? z 1993 označil Higgsov bozón ako „božskú časticu“.[3]
