Robert Philip Hanssen (April 18, 1944 June 5, 2023) was a former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent and convicted spy for the Soviet Union and Russia.

He spied for Soviet and Russian intelligence services against the United States from 1979 to 2001. His espionage was called by the Department of Justice as "possibly the worst intelligence disaster in U.S. history."[1]

He was serving a 15 consecutive life sentences at ADX Florence, a federal supermax prison near Florence, Colorado.

On June 5, 2023, Hanssen was found dead in his jail cell, aged 79.[2] The cause of death was colon cancer.[2][3]
